I have not received any response which covers automatic speech to text transcription - I have looked at Transcribe, OneNote and others but these require you to listen to the recording and dictate it into a piece of software - I do NOT want to do that, it is far too cumbersome when you have hours of recordings. However, I have found a video online which I have followed and am trying that method. The video on YouTube by Tech Tzu is the best I have found - Transcribing audio recording to text free. He advises how to download an digital audio virtual cable and other software to link your recording directly from Audacity to be transcribed to a file in Google.docs. I have tried it briefly and it works but there are some drawbacks: you have to convert WAV files to MP3 and switch your sound system to the virtual cable, etc. You also need to keep the Google.docs page open for the full recording to be transcribed. I think I will have to upload my recordings to Audacity and cut them into sections to make it easier to replay and be transcribed.
As I have said, I am no tech expert and I had to go through the video about 10 times to understand what he was saying and have worked my way through it very slowly and will need to do a lot of testing to make sure I can do it easily - but it did work. I am disappointed that Google has not addressed this issue of having software which allows a recording to be transcribed through the computer as has Apple, the emphasis seems to be on dictatin very short bits of text.
